A total of 128 chess players have officially signed up for the 4th Touchmove Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament, which is set for 9 a.m. on Aug. 24 at the atrium of SM City Mall in Roxas City.
The one-day event will follow a seven-round Swiss system format, with each participant given 15 minutes per game plus a 3-second increment per move.
Roxas City, the Seafood Capital of the Philippines, will serve as the nation’s chess hub for the day, drawing some of the country’s top-caliber players along with rising provincial talent.
Twenty-eight titled players are expected to headline the tournament, adding prestige and competitive fire to the event.
Leading the roster are four Philippine Grandmasters: Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez and Daniel Quizon — all of whom have represented the country in major international tournaments.
Also joining the fray are six International Masters, five FIDE Masters and eight National Masters from various regions, all vying for the top prize and national recognition.
A Woman National Master from Aklan will also take part, adding to the event’s diversity.
Rounding out the list of titled participants are one Arena Master, two Arena FIDE Masters and one Arena Candidate Master.
“This tournament is special not just because of the number of participants, but also because it brings together legends, top talents and emerging players under one roof,” said event spokesperson EJ Basilonia.
The event aims to promote chess at the grassroots level while offering provincial players a rare opportunity to compete against the country’s elite.
More than 100 rated and aspiring players from rural areas are expected to battle on the boards, bringing energy and unpredictability to the tournament.
“This is a big moment for Capiz,” Basilonia added.
“We hope it inspires more kids from the provinces to pick up the game.”
The Touchmove Invitational is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated chess tournaments in the country.
With a strong mix of veteran and young players, organizers are hopeful this year’s edition will further elevate interest and participation in Philippine chess.
Winners are expected to take home trophies, medals and cash prizes, with a total prize pool of PHP100,000 at stake.
