111 active Covid-19 cases in city are kids

111 children 17 years old and below are under monitoring for Covid-19, based on data from the Iloilo City Health Office (CHO) as of August 18, 2021.

Out of the 111 pediatric cases, 11 are nine years old; 10 are 14 years old; 10 are 15 years old; and 8 cases each for 17-, 12-, and 10-year-old columns.

Iloilo City now has 995 pediatric Covid-19 cases from January 1 to August 18, 2021.

The city saw a significant rise in Covid-19 cases involving children in May with 153 cases to June (315 cases), July (243), and August (154).

The increasing number of children infected with Covid-19 in the metro has alarmed Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas as he called on parents to take part and get themselves vaccinated to protect their children from Covid-19.

“As a parent, it is heartbreaking to see images and videos of kids suffering and fighting for their lives. Around 75% of the target population are yet to be vaccinated and kids remain vulnerable as we wait for the approval of the immunization of their age group. We do not want our children to suffer, and as parents, we will do the best we can to protect them,” he said in his previous statement.

The mayor added that the city has the capacity to inoculate up to 13,000 individuals per day.

With the city’s “open for all” vaccination program every Thursday, the mayor added that the city can expand its vaxx program and inoculate more individuals outside the city who are willing to be vaccinated.

“As a parent, we have the power to protect our children by taking part in the global vaccination program. With the availability of vaccines in the city, we can eliminate the threat of morbidity by guarding ourselves. Covid does not choose any age, gender, the best vaccine that we can get is what is available,” he added. (ERS)
