The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers aren’t done with their heavy recruitment stage heading into the new UAAP men’s basketball season.

After securing the commitment of some top prospects over two months since head coach Pido Jarencio reclaimed his post as the new chief mentor, the Growling Tigers added another promising name after tapping Fil-Canadian star Gabriel Obusan confirmed last March 23, 2023.

Obusan recently stole the limelight during the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) basketball tournament after representing team Toronto in the Division I category.

The leftie six-foot-four guard’s artillery was in full display after showing his shooting, passing, and attacking prowess against the best of the best high school players from all over the world.

Obusan quickly introduced himself when Toronto matched up with UST and acted as the stabilizer with his high-level IQ inside the playing court.

According to coach Jarencio, securing the commitment of Obusan will help them progress in their attempt to rebuild the struggling UST team that failed to punch a Final Four spot in the last three UAAP seasons.

“Malaking tulong si Obusan sa atin. Malaki ang katawan na kayang makipagbakbakan sa loob at may tira din sa labas. Bagay na bagay siya sa sistemang pinapatakbo natin sa UST,” said coach Jarencio.

Obusan will have all five years of eligibility once he dons the yellow and white jersey of the Growling Tigers and will be a huge help to superstar Nic Cabañero who became a one-man army team in the last season.

The all-around guard also announced his arrival at España and is ready to take on the challenge of helping the Growling Tigers succeed under the system of coach Jarencio.
