Faculty members, researchers, and students from UP Visayas (UPV) participated and won awards in the recently concluded 10th International Fisheries Symposium (IFS) and ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) in Vietnam.
Twenty –five (25) participants from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) and two from the College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Biological Sciences attended the in-person conference held in Nha Trang University, Nha Trang, Vietnam last December 5-7, 2022.
CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap and Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Prof. Harold M. Monteclaro led the UPV participants.
Yap was one of the session chairs in Session 5 – Fishing and fishery technology, policy and law, aquatic resources and environmental management, biodiversity and climate change. She was also the over-all chair of the Search for the 2022 Outstanding ASEAN-FEN Young Scientist, a component of the IFS that recognizes and acknowledges young scientists from Southeast Asia who have made major contributions to fisheries and aquaculture.
Moreover, Prof. Dr. Augusto S. Serrano, Jr., faculty member of the Institute of Aquaculture, UPV-CFOS, was one of the chairpersons in Session 2: Aquatic animal nutrition and physiology.
Meanwhile, presentations of Ms. Yessamin T. Lebaquin, Asst. Prof. Dr. Iris Ann G. Borlongan, Ms. Anne Brigette B. Ledesma, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rhoda Mae C. Simora, and Ms. Ma. Ramela Angela C. Bermeo bagged awards as Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster Presentations in the annual academic conference.
Lebaquin and Borlongan won first and second places, respectively, as Best Oral Presentations.
Lebaquin presented her undergraduate research paper titled “Carrageenan qualities of different farmed Kappaphycus variants in San Dionisio, Iloilo.” It bested other papers in Session 5- Fishing and fishery technology, policy and law, aquatic resources and environmental management, biodiversity and climate change.
Borlongan’s paper titled “Micropropagation of eucheumatoids using brown seaweed liquid extracts from Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria digitata,” was one of the papers presented in Session 1 – Aquaculture biotechnology and engineering. On the other hand, the poster presentations authored by Ledesma, Simora, and Bermeo were among the conference’s Best Poster Presentation.
Ledesma’s presentation about “Distribution of oriental angelwing clams Pholas orientalis (Gmelin 1791) in Western Visayas, Philippines” came out on top among other entries in Session 5 – Fishing and fishery technology, policy and law, aquatic resources and environmental management, biodiversity, and climate change.”
Simora conquered Session 2- Aquatic animal nutrition and physiology with her poster on “Electroporation as an effective delivery system to integrate Cathelicidin gene in Channel catfish genome by CRISPR/CAS9 knock-in system.”
Bermeo’s presentation on “Effect of water parameters on the condition index revealed meat quality of slipper shaped oysters Magallana bilineata from Visayas, Philippines” was the winner in Session 2 – Aquatic animal nutrition and physiology.
With the theme “Adapt to changes,” this year’s IFS was participated by around 500 participants from 30 universities in Southeast Asia.
Nha Trang University, Can Tho University, Nong Lam University, and Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry hosted the 10th IFS. (Ms. Lenilyn B. Gallos, CFOS)
