Tricycle driver killed, 8 student-passengers hurt in road mishap

BACOLOD City – A tricycle driver died while his eight passengers suffered minor injuries after they fell into a sugarcane field in Barangay Cubay, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental last Monday.

Killed was Freddie Rivera, 63, of Barangay La Granja.

Police Staff Sergeant Erwin Antonio, investigator of La Carlota City Police Station, said Rivera allegedly lost control of his tricycle and swerved to the opposite lane before falling into the sugarcane field.

Rivera was supposed to send home his student passengers when the accident happened.

Antonio said the tricycle was not overloaded.

“Hinali naman lang nga indi niya na macontrol ang tricycle,” he added.

Antonio said that Rivera was declared dead on arrival at a hospital, while one of the passengers was referred to a hospital here.

Antonio said the other passengers were later discharged from the hospital.
