Road mishaps claim 251 lives in WV in 8 months

The Police Regional Office (PRO)-6 recorded 251 deaths due to vehicular incidents in the past eight months of 2021.

From January to August 2021, PRO-6 logged 4,550 vehicular incidents all over the region wherein 251 were categorized as “reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.”

But this year’s record is lower compared to the 264 deaths in the same months last year.

Negros Occidental province registered the most number of deaths at 105 in 2020 and 104 in 2021.

In 2020, Iloilo province recorded 56 fatalities and 76 the following year.

On top of the 251 fatalities, the 4,550 road mishaps also injured 1,817 persons.

Iloilo City recorded the most number of road incidents at 1,561 or 34.30 percent of the total cases in the region.

Iloilo province posted 1,251 cases (27.49 percent); Negros Occidental, 608 incidents; Capiz, 564; Aklan, 199; Antique, 177; Iloilo City, 121; and Guimaras, 69.

The two-year vehicular incidents records may have decreased as fewer vehicles were on the streets due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

Still, Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, PRO-6 spokesperson, that the police have been doing their part to promote road safety among motorists.
