BACOLOD City – A radio broadcaster was gunned down by two unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants at Barangay Piapi, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental Thursday morning.
Dindo Generoso, 67, of Barangay Banilad succumbed to nine gunshot wounds in his body.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilfredo Alarcon, city police chief, said Generoso, a radio commentator in dyEM 96.7 Bai Radio, was driving his car to work when the assailants allegedly tailed him from his house.
Alarcon said the two assailants, who wore masks and helmets, overtook the victim’s vehicle and shot him.
Generoso was rushed to a hospital where he later expired.
Police recovered from the scene seven pieces of .45 caliber ammunition shells.
Alarcon said they are eyeing the victim’s work and land conflict as possible angles in his killing.
Generose was known for his hard-hitting commentaries in his radio program.
Alarcon said Generoso received threats via phone calls, based on the statement of his family.
“He was possibly targeted because of his commentaries,” Alarcon said.
Alarcon also said that the killing might also be related to land conflict because he was representing his family in a land dispute case.
“He (victim) was negotiating with another party regarding their land to be used for commercial purposes. Initially, we are looking at these angles, but we are still trying to dig deeper,” he added.
Meanwhile, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) condemned the killing of the radio broadcaster.
NUJP chairman Nonoy Espina said “whatever the reason, murder is never justified.”
