PSA RSSO-6 hosts gab on 2018 benchmark estimates of WV tourism satellite accounts

The Philippine Statistics Authority Regional Statistical Services Office (PSA-RSSO)-6, in collaboration with the PSA Central Office (PSA CO), held the Consultative and Validation Forum of 2018 Benchmark Estimates of Subnational Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) of Western Visayas on 03 March 2023 at Citadines Amigo Iloilo, Iloilo City.

The TSA is a standard framework aligned with the 2008 System of National Accounts and is used as a primary tool to measure the economic contribution of tourism to the economy.

On the other hand, the Subnational TSA measures the economic contribution of tourism at the regional level.

Region-6 is one of the pilot regions in the Visayas Cluster to conduct Subnational TSA estimation in the country in 2023.

Chief Statistical Specialist Gerald Junne Clariño of the PSA Satellite Accounts Division gave an overview of the Basic Concepts of TSA including its development over time and the creation of the Subnational TSA.

It was followed by the presentation of Ms. Rovelyn Llamas of PSA RSSO VI on the Benchmark Estimates of the Inbound Tourism Expenditures, Domestic Tourism Expenditures, and Internal Tourism Expenditures of Western Visayas for year 2018.

OIC-Regional Director Arecio A. Casing Jr. of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-6 and Ms. Phoebe Zelie Areño of Department of Tourism (DOT)-6 delivered their insights on the usefulness of TSA estimates to their respective office mandates.

Engaging discussions ensued during the open forum to clarify and determine issues regarding data gaps and data collection.

The roles and responsibilities of the partner stakeholders were also discussed to ensure maximum support for the conduct of Subnational TSA estimations and validation.

Representatives from DOT, NEDA, Department of Internal and Local Government (DILG), Provincial/HUC Tourism Offices, and Provincial Statistical Offices participated in the said forum.
