MIWD tree planting kicks off environmental initiatives for 2022

In line with their corporate responsibility to care for rivers, watersheds, and groundwater sources of water in their service areas, employees of Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) kicked off the year with a tree planting program at the Maasin Watershed last Feb 11, 2022.

The tree planting activity was coordinated with the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), which is under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The Maasin local government provided the seedlings.

The tree planting activity is one of the many major initiatives that MIWD and DENR will be conducting for the 2022, which will include Tree Growing, Slope Protection Projects, the reinstatement of the Green Guard within the watershed area, and other water quality improvement measures and environmental protection initiatives that will have long lasting, positive impacts on the preservation and maintenance of the water quality of the Maasin Watershed.

The surface water of the Maasin Watershed provides approximately 64 percent of the water needs of Iloilo City and MIWD’s provincial service areas, an important fact that underscores the importance of preserving the water quality integrity of the area.
