Man shot dead while sleeping inside own house

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A 37-year-old farmer died after he was shot by an unidentified suspect Wednesday, August 10, while sleeping in the living room of their house in Pontevedra, Capiz.

William Barrera of Sitio Caningag, Brgy. Jolongajog, Pontevedra died at Bailan District Hospital.

Investigation by Pontevedra Municipal Police Station indicated that the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when Barrera arrived from a drinking binge with a minor child in Brgy. Bailan of said town.

Barrera was washed with warm water by his son before he went to sleep in a chair.

Police Major Cyril Punzalan, Pontevedra police chief, said they still have no suspects in the incident.

He said the suspect may have sneaked in a long-barreled firearm through a hole on the main door that was made of plywood then shot the victim.

He asked the public to inform them if they have knowledge of the incident.

Edwindo Manansala told police investigator that his cousin has no enemy nor bad records in their village.

Manansala said the victim went home with his minor child who drove the motorcycle.

The victim is living with his two minor children, a boy and a girl. His is an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).

Barrera’s house is made of light materials and surrounded with rice field.

According to his 13-year-old son, he was shocked upon hearing gunfire in the sala of their house. He found his father with blood flowing from the right portion of his back.

Police found two empty shells of an alleged homemade 12-gauge shotgun.
