Lightning kills construction worker in lvisan

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A 30-year-old construction died after he was accidentally hit by lightning Thursday afternoon in a construction site at Barangay Poblacion Norte, Ivisan, Capiz.

Niño B. Ocson of Barangay Lawaan, Roxas City was declared dead on arrival in a hospital here.

According to Erwin Vallejo, construction foreman, it was raining when Ocson sought shelter under a cement mixer near their barracks. Lightning then struck and hit the victim.

The victim suffered third degree burns on his back and other parts of his body.

He was immediately rescued by colleagues and carried on a mini-dump truck. The victim was later transferred to the patrol car of Ivisan PNP which took him to Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital.

PSSg Edward Peter Hari-on, Ivisan MPS investigator, said the lightning first hit a bamboo tree that propped up the construction materials

The lightning may have bounced off the bamboo then hit the victim.

Vallejo said Ocson has been working for two days as a driver of the cement mixer.

The construction firm is constructing a four-lane road widening project in Barangay Poblacion Norte, Ivisan, Capiz when the incident happened.

The construction firm said it will extend financial assistance with the family of the victim.
