Kagawad shoots tanod over old grudges

A village council member voluntarily surrendered after shooting a barangay tanod late afternoon of March 3, 2019 at Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Barangay Kagawad Arsenio Gabanto, 70, of Barangay Q. Abeto, Mandurriao, allegedly attacked Billardo Daquin while the latter was fixing his owner-type jeep at Barangay Hibao-an Sur.

Police Executive Master Sergeant Ma. Dalia Tabares, Mandurriao police deputy chief, said that while Gabanto is a resident of Q. Abeto, he temporarily stays at Sampaguita Subdivision in Hibao-an Sur village.

When Gabanto saw Daquin, he allegedly shot the victim on the right side of his face.

Daquin was rushed to the Western Visayas Medical Center for treatment.

The suspect, who used to be Q. Abeto’s barangay captain, admitted that he was drunk when the incident happened.

Gabanto voluntarily surrendered sans the firearm used in the shooting.

Tabares said the suspect told investigators that old grudges triggered the incident.

Reports said Daquin frequently called out Gabanto over his alleged mistress’ attitude. He also labeled the victim as “suplado” and “tikalon.”

Edna, the victim’s wife, admitted that her husband confronted Gabanto over his alleged mistress’ attitude. She claimed that Gabanto’s partner, on several instances, had scolded her husband.

But it remains unclear what prompted the alleged mistress to admonish Daquin.

Edna also said they would file charges against Gabanto.
