Iloilo City has made it in the national selection process of the 2022 National Literacy Awards (NLA) for outstanding local government (LGU) in the highly urbanized city (HUC) category.

The Local Coordinating Council (LCC) has announced in its social media page on Thursday the different LGUs and non-government organizations (NGOs) which passed the national selection process of the National Literacy Awards.

In the HUC category, Iloilo City alongside Pasay City in the National Capital Region (NCR), Butuan City, and Agusan del Norte in the CARAGA region were the shortlisted LGU for the NLA.

Iloilo City is the only LGU from Western Visayas that made it to the national selection process and will be vying for the NLA.

Meanwhile, Uygongco Foundation Inc. from Iloilo City also passed the national selection process for outstanding literacy program category.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed his delight over the distinction highlighting that it is a clear manifestation of the city’s efforts to implement programs in the community aimed at improving the education sector.

“Our efforts to promote literacy among our constituents was recognized during the National Literacy Award.  Nagapaninguha guid kita nga makahatag sang maayu nga programa sa aton komunidad kag para sa mga pamatan-on labi na guid sa pagsulong sang edukasyon,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

LGUs and NGOs that have made it to the national selection process of the NLA were also hailed as Regional NLA Winners, after being endorsed to the Council by their respective DepEd Regional Offices.

The LCCC shall announce the top 5 shortlisted entries from each category and will be subjected to onsite validation by the NLA Board of Judges.

The Department of Education (DepEd) through the LCCC holds the NLA in conjunction with the celebration of the National Literacy Week. The biennial event aims to recognize exemplary literary practices of LGUs and NGOs and to contribute to the realization of the goal of universalizing literacy in the Philippines by creating public awareness and interest in the programs and projects in addressing this concern.
