Guimaras’ palay yield down 17.34% from 2017 level

Guimaras’ palay production displayed erratic trends in three consecutive years (2016-2018) with highest outputs in 2017 before dropping by 17.34 percent in 2018 due to decreased production in both irrigated and rainfed palay farms.

Yield per hectare also dropped by 18.48 percent in 2018 from 19,864 hectares to 16,193 hectares in 2018.

Rainfed palay production consistently improved from 2016-2017, however it dropped by 20.53 percent in 2018 with 34,421 MT production. Likewise, Irrigated farms contributing 24.73 percent to the total palay production of the province recorded a cutback of negative 5.85 percent from a substantial growth of 29.74 percent in 2017.

In area harvested, both irrigated and rainfed farms showed decrement, wherein, irrigated farms contracted by 5.42 percent or 190 hectares in 2018 the same trend with rainfed farms which decreased by 21.28 percent condensed by 3,481 hectares.

All provinces showed upward trends except for Capiz and Guimaras provinces which posted inconsistent production from 2016-2018.

Meanwhile, the bulk of palay yield in Western Visayas region came from the provinces of Iloilo and Negros Occidental contributing 40.08 percent and 21.78 percent, respectively while Guimaras province contributed the least.
