Grandma killed in fire

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A 91-year-old grandmother died after she was trapped inside her burning house Friday evening at Sitio Lawis, Barangay Tawog, Sigma, Capiz.

The Sigma Municipal Fire Station identified the victim as Remedios Abal.

Arson investigators said an unattended lighted candle might be the cause of the fire. Abal had the habit of saying the rosary every evening before a candle-lit altar.

The victim was heard asking for help when the conflagration occurred around 10:30pm. But the fire quickly spread and gobbled the house made of light materials.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire gobbled an estimated P50,000 worth of properties. The nearby house of the victim’s grandson was partially burned.

Meanwhile, another house was razed to the ground also on Friday evening at Sitio Orok, Barangay Dapdapan in Sapian, Capiz.

Based on the investigation of BFP-Ivisan, the house was owned by Luzvisminda Tamayo, 61.

The BFP received the fire call around 8 p.m. The blaze was quelled by 9:33pm.

No one was inside the house as the owners were in a funeral wake of a relative also in the said village.

Arson investigators said the fire ate up P200,000 worth of properties. The cause remains undetermined.

On Saturday afternoon, an abandoned boarding house made of light materials was totally burned in another blaze at Purok 1, Barangay Libas here.

The boarding house is owned by Virgie Alba, who is now staying in Bohol. No one was injured in the incident.

Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
