France declared the biggest European football league’s season over.

Due to the havoc caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, France’s Ligue 1 organizers decided to suspend the season, claiming that it would be difficult to reset everything with the pandemic still ongoing.

Following the decision of the season’s cancelation, the organizers also declared the champion based on the statistical points the teams earned before the stoppage of the games.

The Paris Saint-Germain, the number one team in the league with 12 points, was named by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) as league’s champion.

LFP is France’s football governing body, and its decision earned tons of criticisms and controversies.

Declaring PSG as champions with an unfinished season boggled some clubs, leaving most of them disappointed while some sought legal action towards the decision.

“There is no ambiguity about this declaration. We needed to make a final decision about this season. We acknowledge that the 2019-2020 season is over,” said LFP president Nathalie Boy de la Tour.
