The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office is putting up a ₱59.40-million flood control project along the Suage River in Mina, Iloilo.

District Engineer Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the flood control structure will protect lives and properties in the rural and urban areas of the town as well as its neighboring municipalities.

These structures will also divert water flow by re-directing rivers, slowing the natural changes in the riverbanks or preventing the inundation of vulnerable floodplains.

By keeping water out, flood control structures lessen harm to physical infrastructure and help to ensure the continuation of communities’ economic and social activity and will provide for urban stability, economic growth and trade, and food and water availability.

Since the structure lies parallel to the Pototan-Mina-Janiuay National Road connecting the Iloilo-Capiz (New Route) and Iloilo-Capiz Road (Old Route) the structure will also protect not only the residents, agricultural communities and commercial establishments surrounding the Suage River, but will also provide protection to the travelling public in case of a sudden surge in flood waters.
