A farmer was killed after his own gun allegedly went off evening of Dec 26, 2021 in Igbaras, Iloilo.

Rolando Estoleros was on his way home from their farm at Barangay Igpigus, Igbaras when the incident happened.

Police indicated that Estoleros and two companions were crossing an improvised bridge around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

As they crossed, he allegedly fell from a height of around 6 feet.

Unfortunately, the homemade 12-gauge shotgun placed inside his sling bag went off and the shrapnel hit the right portion of his body.

He was rushed to Rep. Pedro Trono Memorial District Hospital in Guimbal town but was declared dead on arrival at 12:54 a.m. of the next day.

Lieutenant Rodel Pasion, Igbaras police chief, said it might have taken some time before Estoleros was taken to the hospital because Igpigus is 15 kilometers from the town proper.

The village is a far-flung area and one has to tackle rough terrain to reach the place.

It was not immediately known why the victim was carrying a gun.

But Pasion claimed it has been a common practice among upland villagers to arm themselves.
