A former barangay tanod (village councilman) was arrested following a firearm raid at his house in Barangay Malag-it, Calinog, Iloilo early morning of Oct 1, 2022.

Police operatives swooped on the house of 42-year-old Jhonyl Carias and roused him from his sleep.

Members of Calinog Municipal Police Station, together with the 606th Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion and the 2nd Iloilo Mobile Force Company implemented a search warrant on Carias’ house around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Judge Gemalyn Faunillo-Tarol of the Regional Trial Court Branch 76 in Janiuay, Iloilo issued the search warrant on Sept. 29, 2022.

Recovered during the operation was a homemade 12-gauge shotgun (rifle type) with magazine loaded with seven ammunition and another homemade 12-gauge shotgun (break-type) with five ammunitions.

Major Dadje Delima, Calinog police chief, said that the suspect has been the subject of several complaints in their village.

He was accused of indiscriminately firing his gun, especially when he is drunk.

But Carias told the police that his guns were for self-defense.

The suspect is now detained and will be charged with violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act).
