Ex-seaman killed in Guimaras

A FORMER seafarer was gunned down early evening of April 3, 2019 in Sibunag, Guimaras.

Joel Gasangan, 38, was driving his motorcycle along Barangay Maabay when he was shot.

Police investigation indicated that Gasangan came from Sitio Camulong in Barangay Maabay and was on his way home when the incident happened.

Police Captain Rico Sta. Ana, Sibunag police chief, said Gasangan succumbed to a gunshot wound on the back of his head. He was declared dead at the Dr. Catalino Gallego Nava Provincial Hospital in Jordan town.

A resident claimed to have heard a single gunfire but did not see any person or vehicle pass by.

Sta. Ana said the area is dimly lit and the resident only discovered the wounded Gasangan when he checked the area.

As this developed, police investigators are looking at personal grudges as possible motive of the incident.

“We don’t see his link to politics or a third party affair,” Sta. Ana said.

Police are considering that Gasangan had a passenger with him when the incident happened.

Sta. Ana refused to divulge more details but claimed they already have a person of interest.

Gasangan stopped his seafaring career five years ago after it was found out that he had a heart ailment.

During weekdays, he would bring his teacher-wife to work.

A month ago, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) sounded alarm over unresolved murder cases in Guimaras province.

Prior to Gasangan’s killing, three murder cases happened in less than two months.

The latest happened 6:45 pm of March 3, at Barangay Cabungahan, San Lorenzo town.

Exequiel Cabrieto , 58, the Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Officer of San Lorenzo town, was killed inside his house.

On Jan. 19, 2019, a man who was respondent to a criminal charge was killed in Jordan town.

The men who killed Rufo Tahum was on board a Mitsubishi Montero Sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Police reports said that Tahum, a resident of Barangay San Miguel, Jordan, was plying his motorcycle when he was repeatedly shot.

His lone passenger, 23-year old John Stephen Mondia, was also hit but survived.

Two days before that, a man who was criminally charged for allegedly raping his daughter was gunned down at San Lorenzo town.

Aurelio Mission, 42, was repeatedly shot while at a store owned by his sister at Barangay Aguilar, several meters away from his house.

On August 2018, Mission was charged for five counts of rape for allegedly molesting his 16-year old daughter.
