Contreras proclaimed as new Capiz governor

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – Vice Gov. Esteban Evan “Nonoy” Contreras was proclaimed late Tuesday afternoon as the new governor of Capiz.

The Provincial Elections Board of Canvasser (PEBC) led by OIC provincial elections supervisor Tomas Valera proclaimed Contreras after the results from the town of Tapaz was transmitted.

Gov. Antonio del Rosario lost his reelection bid to Contreras by a big margin of votes on May 13.

Del Rosario of the Liberal Party (LP) got only 142,985 votes against Contreras, an independent candidate, who garnered 160,701 votes, for a margin of 17,716 votes.

The incumbent governor won in Roxas City over Contreras by a margin of 1,600 votes. He also won in the towns of Maayon and Pilar in the First District of Capiz, and in the towns of Mambusao, Dao, Cuartero, Dumalag and Jamindan in the Second District.

Contreras’ votes from the towns of Panay, Pontevedra, Panitan and President Roxas in the First District, and Ivisan, Dumarao, Sapian, Sigma and Tapaz in the Second District overcame Del Rosario’s ballots.
