ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The city government here shouldered the burial expenses of a 1-year-old boy who was killed in a fire that burned their house Monday evening at Oakwood Subdivision in Barangay Mongpong, Roxas City.

In a Facebook post, Mayor Ronnie Dadivas said that he instructed the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) to proceed to the house of the victim and get the whole story of the incident.

Considering that the family is poor, the city government shouldered the coffin of the victim including the burial and blessing through Pastor Nono Aposaga before the boy was buried at Banica cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

Couple Maricar Bensing, 19, and Patrick Denobo, 20, are in sorrow after their only son Peter perished in the fire that gobbled their house which was made of light materials.

Maricar said she went out of the house to charge her cellphone in a neighboring computer cafe as they have no electricity. Her husband followed her and left the boy who was sleeping in their house.

The fire is believed to have erupted from a candle that Maricar lit and placed on a plastic cabinet before she went out.
