CAFGU dies in ‘accidental’ gun discharge

A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) died in an alleged accidental gun discharge incident early evening of March 7, 2021 in Miag-ao, Iloilo.

The victim was identified as Ernest Nicar, 26, a CAFGU member assigned to the Dalije CAFGU Active Auxiliary Detachment at Barangay Dalije, a hinterland village around 19 kilometers from the town proper.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. Sunday but police received the report more than two hours later.

A certain Geri Flor, 51, a seaman from Barangay Baybay Norte, Miagao, personally reported the incident to police authorities.

According to reports, the victim was talking towards his mother Terry outside their house before the incident happened.

He reportedly crouched to grab a bowl of soup when his handgun fell. The gun allegedly went off and the bullet hit his chest.

The victim was taken to Pedro G. Trono Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

In New Lucena, Iloilo, another incident of accidental firing was reported 8:30 p.m. of Sunday.

The incident injured Alfredo Maduque, 74, a resident of Barangay Cabilauan, New Lucena.

Maduque, who was believed to be drunk, accidentally pulled the trigger of his 12–gauge homemade shotgun. The pellets hit his right knee.

He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital for treatment while the gun was recovered and is now in police custody.
