BSP forges stronger ties with GRIPS

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) forged stronger ties with the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan’s international premier policy school based in Tokyo, Japan.

With a shared theme of sustaining development goals through high quality education, the BSP and the GRIPS jointly organized the BSP-GRIPS Academic Conference with the theme “Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals”.

The conference, held on 21 June 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), was in celebration of the 70th year of central banking in the Philippines, the 20th year anniversary of the GRIPS and the 40th year anniversary of the Graduate School of Policy Science (GSPS), the predecessor of GRIPS.

Notable presenters from GRIPS faculty and alumni discussed emerging policy issues covering (1) digital innovation as a pathway towards inclusive growth; (2) state-building experience of the then central bank of the Philippines; (3) value-added from intellectual property derived export revenues in the United States; and (4) the role of financial literacy in achieving financial inclusion.

During the event, a posthumous award was bestowed on the late BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla, Jr. in honor of his outstanding achievements as a GRIPS graduate who rose from the ranks to become the Governor in 2017.

The academic conference was followed by a dinner reception which kicked off the launching of the GRIPS Philippine Alumni Chapter.  The GRIPS/GSPS has produced around 206 graduates in the Philippines, 16 of whom are from the BSP.  Over the last two years, GRIPS has organized alumni chapters as well in Thailand and Indonesia.
