BIR and DOJ to build stronger ties for stronger tax law enforcement

Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr. had a meeting with Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla of the Department of Justice on February 16, 2023 at the Office of the Secretary in Manila City to establish stronger ties.

This comes after the nationwide filing of seventy-four (74) criminal complaints for tax evasion amounting to Php.3.58 Billion of the BIR before the DOJ last February 02, 2023.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue reiterated its aggressive stance against erring taxpayers who failed to comply with the National Internal Revenue Code, as amended.

“I’ll make sure that my people are transparent and that they work with integrity. Gawin natin ang mga bagay para malaman ng publiko na ang BIR at ang DOJ ay seryoso para habulin ang mga may pagkukulang sa pagbabayad ng buwis” Commissioner Lumagui said.

Sec. Remulla assured the BIR that the DOJ will work hand-in-hand with the Bureau to ensure that erring taxpayers suffer the full force of the law.

Intensification of enforcement activities is one of the pillars of Commissioner Lumagui’s administration. This includes the filing of cases before the DOJ. The BIR is serious in its enforcement activities due to its positive impact on taxpayer’s voluntary compliance.
