BACOLOD City – Three persons were injured after they were shot by motorcycle-riding assailants at Barangay Inayawan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental Saturday night.

Wounded were cousins – Aljon Diaz, 28, and Khent Diaz, 39, and his wife Novie Joy Diaz, 20, all residents of the said village.

Police Major Lowell Garinganao, town police chief, said the three victims were standing at the roadside when the suspects identified as brothers-in-law Generoso Melis, 21, and Ariel Suarez, 28, of the said barangay, passed by and allegedly fired a .9mm calibre against them, and fled.

They were chased by barangay watchmen, village officials, and the military until they were later arrested at their house.

Garinganao said the shooting happened when the suspects mistook the victims as back-up of the man whom they earlier encountered in a commotion at the area.

“They went home after the commotion to get a firearm and returned to the area, where they shot them,” he added.

He said the firearm used in the crime was not recovered as the suspects alleged that they threw it after the incident.

The three victims are still confined at a hospital in Sipalay City while the two suspects are now in police custody and will be facing charges.
