FOURTEEN colleges and universities from around the Philippines received digital library devices from the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD).

Stephen Alayon, acting head of the library and data banking service section of SEAFDEC/AQD, said the turn-over ceremony of the IAMSLIC (International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers) Digital Fisheries Libraries was held recently during the celebration of SEAFDEC/AQD’s 46th founding anniversary in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

“The colleges and universities which were chosen recipients of the virtual libraries offer BS Fisheries program,” he said.

The 14 schools which received the digital library devices are:

  • Romblon State University in Sta. Fe;
  • Mindanao State University in Buug;
  • Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in Calabanga;
  • Cebu Technological University in Moalboal;
  • Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College in Sta. Maria;
  • Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in Binalbagan;
  • Catanduanes State University in Virac;
  • Davao del Norte State College in Panabo;

The IAMSLIC Digital Fisheries Library Box contains more than 26,000 PDFs of aquatic and marine science publications, including SEAFDEC publications.

Alayon said users can access the digital library box using their mobile phones and laptops with Wi-Fi connections, adding that the Digital Library Box is intended for those off the grid.

“We all know that most of the fisheries schools are located in places with intermittent or no internet connection and erratic power supply,” he said. (PIA)
